Diepgroene schaduwen onder een overwoekerde auto. Bruintinten van aarde op de grond. Een scheutje fel oranje van een flamboyante boom: dit zijn de kleurtonen van de vegetatie in de geboorteplaats van Lou Cocody-Valentino. Kleuren die worden weerspiegeld in haar tactiele installaties gemaakt van stoffen en sculpturen van papier-maché.
De stoffen waar Lou mee werkt dragen hun eigen verleden – hun gebreken, hun ondoorzichtigheid, vloeibaarheid, zachtheid – het creëert een gevoel van intimiteit tussen de kunstenaar en haar materialen. Elk door haar bewerkt textiel vertelt een eigen verhaal, zo verwijst ze op abstracte wijze naar een landschap dat in haar geheugen is gegrift door deze op een gordijn van haar Brusselse appartement af te drukken, of print ze een familieportret op een kussensloop uit haar kindertijd. Elke sculptuur is gemaakt als een anker, verbindt de textielwerken en geeft ze een plek om te rusten.
Lou zoekt een harmonie in haar werk door de vergeten materialen die ze gebruikt, te bewerken met verschillende technieken. Zoals natuurlijk verven, zeefdrukken, naaien of vlechten. Haar werk wil een poëtische archipel zijn, een poreuze plek waar elk kunstwerk reageert op het volgende.
Geboren op het Caribische eiland Martinique, is haar kunstpraktijk doordrenkt met herinneringen aan haar jeugd als eilandbewoner, met landschappen en mensen die haar hebben gevormd. Ze speelt met de fragmentatie die ze ervaart in het vormen van haar identiteit, door composities te creëren die hun eigen stukjes landschap worden: een persoonlijke geografie.
Binnen de muren van RUIS maakte Cocody-Valentino een site-specific installatie als onderdeel van het ModeMonster festival. De installatie bestaat uit stof met genaaide fragmenten of digitaal geprinte foto’s waarin je door de kunstenaar gemaakte analoge foto’s kunt herkennen, genomen op haar laatste reis naar haar geboortegrond, Martinique.

Lou Cocody-Valentino is beeldend kunstenaar. Ze werd geboren in 1994 en groeide op in Martinique, voordat ze naar Parijs verhuisde en vervolgens naar Brussel waar ze vandaag de dag nog altijd woont en werkt. In 2021 studeerde ze af aan de Master Printmaking aan La Cambre (BE). Haar kunstpraktijk omvat printen, schilderen, het maken van textiel composities en installaties. Haar creaties komen voort uit een reflectie op kleur, compositie, gelaagdheid en translucentie. Na eerst klassieke druktechnieken te hebben gestudeerd – vooral gericht op etsen – experimenteert Lou nu met gerecyclede materialen buiten de traditionele ambachten. Zoals beeldhouwen met gerecycled

Deep green shadows under an overgrown car. Browns of the soil. A splash of bright orange from a flamboyant tree: these are the hues of the vegetation in Lou Cocody-Valentino’s birthplace. Shades that are reflected in her tactile installations, made of fabrics and paper mache sculptures.
These fabrics all carry their own past – their flaws, their opacity, fluidity, softness – which creates a feeling of intimacy between the artist and her materials.
Each textile tells a story, from abstract references to a landscape stored in her memory and printed on a curtain from her Brussels apartment, to a family portrait printed on a pillowcase from her childhood. Each sculpture is made as an anchor, connecting the fluid textile works and giving them a place to rest.
Lou aims to find harmony amongst forgotten materials, by using various techniques, such as natural dyeing, screenprinting, sewing or braiding. Her work aims to be a poetic archipelago, a porous place where each artwork responds to the next.
Born on the Caribbean island of Martinique, Lou infuses her work with memories of her childhood as an islander, with landscapes and people who shaped her. She plays on the fragmentation of self she experiences, by creating compositions which become their own pieces of landscape. A personal geography.
Within the walls of RUIS, Cocody-Valentino made a site-specific installation as part of the ModeMonster festival consisting of fabric with sewed fragments or digitally printed pictures in which you can recognize the artist’s own analog photographs taken on her latest travel to her native soil, Martinique.
Lou Cocody-Valentino is a visual artist, graduated in 2021 from a Printmaking MA at La Cambre (BE).
Born in 1994, she grew up in Martinique, before moving to Paris, then Brussels where she currently lives and works.
Her process involves printing, painting, creating textile compositions and installations. Her creations stem from a reflection on color, composition, layering and translucency. Having first studied classical printing techniques – focusing mostly on etching – Lou now experiments with recycled materials outside of the traditional realm, sculpting with recycled paper, printing shapes on fabrics, painting on wood panels or weaving upcycled yarns.
